The MGT is the compact diffusion multi gas monitor in the Senko range. It covers the four gases that account for most confined space fatalities: oxygen, combustibles as percent LEL, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide.
Diffusion, and what that means for confined space work
The MGT is a diffusion instrument. Gas reaches the sensors by moving into the instrument on its own, which means the MGT samples the air where the instrument is. That makes it the right tool to wear on the body during work inside a space, and the wrong tool to test a space you have not entered yet.
Under 29 CFR 1910.146(d)(5)(i) the atmosphere has to be tested before entry is authorized, which means before anyone puts their head or body into the opening. Testing from outside needs a pump and a probe. The pumped instrument in this range is the SP-MGTP. A common and defensible setup is one pumped instrument per crew for the pre entry test, and a diffusion monitor worn by each entrant during the work.
