Fractional EHS
A Fractional Safety Team for California Construction
Hiring a qualified in-house safety manager in California costs $85,000 to $400,000 a year once you count salary, burden, and turnover. The good ones are hard to find and harder to keep. Most contractors carry full Cal/OSHA exposure without ever making that hire. Fractional EHS closes the gap: a credentialed safety team (CHST, CSP, CIH) that runs your safety function on a monthly retainer, for a fraction of the cost of the hire.
Two ways to work with us
- Supplemental. You keep your internal safety owner and we back them up with training, inspections, written programs, and senior guidance when the hard questions land on their desk.
- Full outsource. M Squared becomes your safety department. We run a 90-day transition, then handle the function month to month.
What every retainer includes
- Monthly safety training built for field crews.
- A site inspection program, built and deployed, with documented findings and closure tracking.
- Written programs: Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Heat Illness Prevention Plan, Code of Safe Practices, Emergency Action Plan, Hazard Communication, and site-specific plans.
- Monthly and quarterly reporting for leadership.
- Unlimited phone, email, and Zoom consultation.
- A cost-reduction review of your current safety spend.
Pricing
Retainers are scoped to the hours your operation needs, and priced against one benchmark: the $85,000 to $400,000 a year an in-house hire costs. Most clients pay a small fraction of that. Book a call and we will scope the number with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is Fractional EHS?
Fractional EHS (environmental health and safety) is a retainer arrangement where an outside credentialed safety team runs part or all of a company's safety function. You get the capability of a safety department without creating the position, the way a fractional CFO gives you finance leadership without the executive salary.
How is this different from hiring a safety consultant?
A consultant sells you hours. Fractional EHS carries ongoing responsibility: the training calendar, the inspection cadence, the program updates when Cal/OSHA changes a standard, and the phone call when something goes wrong.
Do you replace our safety person?
Only if you want that. Supplemental mode exists because plenty of clients have a good internal owner who needs backup, not replacement.
Who is it for?
California construction and general industry firms with field crews and real Cal/OSHA exposure. Our clients are usually too big to ignore safety and too small to justify a standing department: concrete, steel, roofing, and general contractors across the state.
