This online course covers the FMCSA reasonable suspicion training rule for supervisors of CDL drivers (49 CFR 382.603, with 49 CFR 382.307) and is written for supervisors.

What you learn

  • Who must be trained, and why
  • What drivers may not do
  • Alcohol: effects and signs
  • Controlled substances: what DOT tests for
  • Signs of drug use, chronic use and withdrawal
  • Making a reasonable suspicion determination
  • Talking to the driver and getting the test done
  • Documenting your observations
  • After the test: removal, referral and your company's policy
  • A final lesson listing what to review about your company's drug and alcohol program

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • 49 CFR 382.603 requires at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and at least 60 minutes on controlled substances use. Two timed study units, one on alcohol and one on controlled substances, each stay open at least 60 minutes.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Sospecha razonable del DOT para supervisores (FMCSA): capacitación en línea.
