This online course teaches welding, cutting and heating safety on California construction sites under the Cal/OSHA Construction Safety Orders (8 CCR 1536, 1537, 1740 to 1743, 1920 to 1924 and 1950 to 1962, with the general safety orders they reach) and is written for construction workers who weld, cut or heat metal, and for the people who work around them, such as helpers and anyone who watches for fire.

What you learn

  • The California rules for welding and hot work
  • Preventing fires from welding, cutting and heating
  • The fire watch
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Gas cylinders: moving, storing and placing them
  • Fuel gas equipment: regulators, hoses and torches
  • Protecting your eyes and skin from the arc and the flame
  • Fumes, ventilation, coatings and respirators
  • Hot work near fuel, on scaffolds and on containers
  • Welding in confined and enclosed spaces

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Seguridad en soldadura y trabajos en caliente en la construcción (Cal/OSHA): capacitación en línea.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

Your employer still sets the hot work rules for your site, decides whether a hot work permit is used, assigns the fire watch and instructs you on your equipment. This course does not qualify you to weld and does not replace hands-on practice with a torch or an extinguisher. The Construction Safety Orders set no fire watch minutes and no required training hours. This course covers construction work. This is the Cal/OSHA course, and federal OSHA's rules differ in several places. A federal OSHA version of this course is sold separately. The course is online only.
