Gas and Range

A compact portable carbon dioxide monitor, for the spaces where CO2 collects and nothing else will see it.

Why carbon dioxide needs its own instrument

Carbon dioxide is invisible to the two sensors people assume will cover them. It is not combustible, so an LEL channel reads nothing. And because it displaces air rather than consuming oxygen chemically, an oxygen sensor only begins to react once the CO2 concentration is already very high. By the time a four gas monitor drops below 19.5 percent oxygen, the carbon dioxide concentration in that space is far above the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 5,000 ppm as an eight hour time weighted average under 29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z-1.

That is the whole argument for a dedicated CO2 instrument. If your hazard is carbon dioxide, an oxygen sensor is a late alarm.

Where it gets used

Breweries and wineries, where fermentation produces CO2 continuously. Beverage dispensing and bulk CO2 rooms. Walk in coolers and cellars. Cold storage. Anywhere a bulk or cylinder CO2 supply sits in a room people walk into. CO2 is heavier than air, so it pools at floor level and in pits, which is exactly where somebody bending down to work is putting their head.

For permanently mounted detection in these spaces, and for the fire code requirements that come with a bulk CO2 system, see carbon dioxide monitoring for breweries and beverage systems.
