This online course teaches safe lifting, how to spot repetitive motion injury, and the controls that reduce strain. It is written for workers in any industry who lift, carry, push, pull or repeat the same motion, and it says which parts are rules and which are guidance from NIOSH, OSHA and Cal/OSHA. It includes a lesson for California workers on 8 CCR 5110 (repetitive motion injuries) and the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (8 CCR 3203).

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

Federal OSHA has no lifting or ergonomics standard. This course teaches what OSHA's letters say and the NIOSH, OSHA and Cal/OSHA guidance, and says which is a rule and which is guidance. It has no hands-on lifting practice, and it cannot see your worksite or watch you lift. Your employer chooses your lifting aids and, in California where it applies, runs the Section 5110 program. The course does not teach the California rules for patient handling in general acute care hospitals (Section 5120) or for hotel housekeepers (Section 3345), or forklifts, cranes and other powered equipment. This course covers federal OSHA and Cal/OSHA. If you work in another state with its own OSHA-approved plan, that state may have different or more stringent rules. The course is online only.
