Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

This course does not make you a rigger, a competent person or a crane operator. Your employer decides who rigs loads and designates who operates cranes, and a competent person designated by your employer inspects slings each day before use (1910.184(d)). The federal sling rule sets no qualifications for the people who attach slings to loads and no minimum training time, so ask your supervisor who does that job at your workplace. The course does not teach crane operation, load weights, lift planning, hand signals, or the rules for construction, shipyards or longshoring. This is the federal OSHA course. If you work in a state with its own OSHA-approved plan, your state may have different or more stringent rules. The course is online only.
