This online course covers the respirator user training topics in the federal OSHA respiratory protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134(k), with Appendix D) and is written for general industry workers who wear respirators.

What you learn

  • Why you wear a respirator
  • Respirator types: what they can and cannot do
  • Filters, cartridges and change schedules
  • Medical evaluation and warning signs
  • Fit testing and a good seal
  • Putting on, checking, using and removing your respirator
  • Emergencies and respirator failure
  • Cleaning, inspection and storage
  • Wearing a respirator by choice: Appendix D
  • The general requirements of the standard
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Protección respiratoria para usuarios de respiradores (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

This course does not include a fit test or a medical evaluation. OSHA requires a medical evaluation before a worker is fit tested or required to use a respirator, and a fit test before a tight-fitting respirator is used (1910.134(e)(1), (f)(2)). The fit test is done in person; your employer arranges both at no cost to you. Your employer must still cover its own written program, respirators and worksite in its training; a review checklist is built into the course.
