Refinery Process Safety Management Awareness (Cal/OSHA) Online Training

This online course covers California's process safety management standard for petroleum refineries (8 CCR 5189.1) and is written for employees who work at a refinery covered by Section 5189.1.

How it works

• You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
• The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
• Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
• The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
• When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. It carries the signature of the M Squared trainer who gives the course and states how understanding was verified (final exam: 25 questions, pass at 80 percent), to support your employer's certification record under Section 5189.1(g)(3)(B). The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

This course explains California's Process Safety Management standard for petroleum refineries (Title 8, Section 5189.1), all of its PSM elements, and each worker's role: the awareness of all PSM elements that Section 5189.1(g)(5) requires for affected employees, as one part of the refinery employer's training program. It is a supplement to, not a replacement for, the refinery employer's process-specific training under Section 5189.1(g), and it does not meet the skilled and trained workforce requirements of Health and Safety Code Section 25536.7 that Section 5189.1(h) applies to refinery contractors.
