This online course covers the contract employee training topics in the federal OSHA process safety management (PSM) standard (29 CFR 1910.119(h)(3)) and is written for contract employees who do maintenance or repair, turnaround, major renovation or specialty work on or next to a covered process.

What you learn

  • What PSM is and why covered sites are different
  • The host, your employer and you
  • Before you start: the site briefing and site entry
  • Safe work practices and work permits
  • Lockout and opening equipment or piping
  • Confined space entry at a PSM site
  • Hot work permits
  • Management of change: never change it on your own
  • Stop and report hazards
  • Alarms, releases and evacuation
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: PSM para empleados de contratistas (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

Questions

Call an M Squared trainer at 949-954-6581, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific time. A trainer answers in English and Spanish.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

The host facility's briefing on its fire, explosion and toxic release hazards and its emergency action plan under 1910.119(h)(3)(ii) is still required before work at each site (OSHA letter of interpretation, Feb. 16, 2022). Craft-specific work practices stay with the contract employer. This course covers federal OSHA only. It does not meet Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 5189(h), or California refinery rules 8 CCR 5189.1 and Health and Safety Code 25536.7. It does not qualify anyone as a confined space entrant, attendant or entry supervisor or as a lockout authorized employee.
