This online course covers the worker training topics in the Cal/OSHA lead rule for general industry as rewritten effective January 1, 2025 (8 CCR 5198(l), with Appendices A and B) and is written for California general industry workers who may be exposed to lead.

What you learn

  • What lead does to your body
  • Presumed significant lead work
  • Exposure limits and air monitoring
  • Controls, the compliance program and signs
  • Housekeeping and hygiene for every exposed worker
  • Respirators
  • Protective clothing, change rooms, showers and lunchrooms
  • Blood lead tests and medical exams
  • Medical removal protection
  • Training, records and your rights
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Plomo en la industria general (Cal/OSHA): capacitación en línea.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

Your employer must still train you on its own operations, controls, work practices and compliance program; a review checklist is built into the course. The course does not fit test respirators and does not provide blood lead testing, medical exams or medical surveillance. It is for general industry in California only. Construction work and agricultural operations fall outside Section 5198.
