This online course covers hydrogen sulfide (H2S) awareness training under the federal Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200(h), with the exposure limits in 29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z-2) and is written for general industry workers who may work where H2S is present.

What you learn

  • What H2S is
  • Where H2S is found
  • How H2S harms you
  • Why you cannot trust your nose
  • The federal exposure limits
  • Your right to know about H2S
  • Gas monitors and alarms
  • Respirators: what the rule requires
  • Emergencies, escape and rescue
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Concientización sobre el sulfuro de hidrógeno (H2S) (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

Questions

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

The course ends with a company review page: each worker reviews the employer's own H2S locations, monitors and alarm levels, evacuation and muster point, rescue plan and SDS location with a supervisor. This is awareness-level training, 100 percent online. It does not replace an operator's ANSI/ASSE Z390.1 H2S training card requirement or offshore BSEE H2S training under 30 CFR 250.490, and it does not include respirator fit testing, confined space entry or rescue training.
