This online course is a yearly refresher on hydrogen sulfide (H2S) under the federal OSHA rules for general industry (29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z-2, 1910.1200(h), 1910.134 and 1910.146), including oil and gas work. No onshore federal OSHA rule requires an H2S refresher every year. This course is for workers who already took an initial H2S course and whose employer chooses yearly retraining or whose site requires it.

What you learn

  • What the rules say about retraining
  • What H2S is and where it is found
  • The ppm ladder and why your nose fails
  • The federal limits and the other numbers
  • Your right to know about H2S
  • Gas monitors and alarms
  • Respirators: what the rule requires
  • Emergencies, escape and rescue
  • A final lesson listing what changed at your workplace, to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Repaso anual de sulfuro de hidrógeno (H2S), no exigido por OSHA (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

No onshore federal OSHA rule requires an H2S refresher every year, and this course is not an OSHA requirement. Some jobs have their own retraining dates under other rules, such as the yearly respirator fit test and retraining where respirators are used (29 CFR 1910.134(f)(2) and (k)(5)), retraining when a new chemical hazard is introduced (1910.1200(h)(1)), and yearly H2S training for offshore work on federal platforms (30 CFR 250.490(g)). This course meets none of those. It does not replace an ANSI Z390.1 operator card or offshore BSEE training. It does not replace your respirator fit test, SCBA practice, drills or your site's contingency plan, which come from your employer. It does not qualify anyone to wear an SCBA, and it does not include air testing or monitor calibration. This is the federal OSHA course. If you work in a state with its own OSHA-approved plan, your state may have different or more stringent rules. The course is online only.
