This online course is the classroom part of forklift operator training. It follows federal OSHA's rule for powered industrial trucks (29 CFR 1910.178 for general industry, which 1926.602(d) applies to construction) and Cal/OSHA's Title 8, Section 3668 and the other sections of Article 25. It covers the general truck and workplace topics, plus a lesson for California workers. Your employer adds your truck type and your site.

What you learn

  • Your training and your employer's duties
  • Your truck: topics, markings and guards
  • Checking your truck before you use it
  • Capacity and stability
  • Driving and working around people
  • Handling loads
  • Ramps, docks, parking and other places
  • Fuel, batteries and hazardous places
  • Working in California
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass the final exam, you finish the online classroom part. M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. issues your certificate of completion after it reviews your employer's signed hands-on checklist. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Capacitación para operadores de montacargas, parte teórica (OSHA federal y Cal/OSHA): capacitación en línea.

The hands-on part, at your workplace

  • This product is the online classroom part. Your employer evaluates your hands-on skills at your workplace with the M Squared hands-on checklist: download the checklist (PDF).
  • The evaluator must be physically present at your workplace. A video or remote evaluation is not accepted.
  • Your employer emails the signed checklist to matt@msquaredsafety.com and monica@msquaredsafety.com. You upload nothing.
  • M Squared reviews the checklist, then marks the course complete and your certificate is issued.
  • The course never qualifies, certifies, designates or authorizes anyone. Only your employer can certify you to operate a forklift (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(6); 8 CCR 3668(f)).

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

This course is the online classroom part only. It has no hands-on practice on a truck, and it does not teach your truck type, your attachments or your site. Your employer must give you hands-on practice on your truck and evaluate you at your workplace (29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2) to (l)(4); 8 CCR 3668). It does not make you an operator. Section 1910.178(l) and Section 3668 put that duty on your employer. The operating rules in the lessons are the general industry rules of 1910.178, and construction workers learn them as the general industry rule and as safe practice. The course does not teach the ANSI B56.1-1969 standard named in 1926.602(c)(1). Federal OSHA rules apply across the country, and Cal/OSHA enforces Title 8 in California. If you work in another state with its own OSHA-approved plan, that state may have different or more stringent rules.
