This online course is the classroom part of training for workers who work on or near exposed energized parts, based on federal OSHA's electrical safety-related work practices for general industry (29 CFR 1910.332 to 1910.335 and the 1910.399 definition of a qualified person). It teaches the approach distances near overhead lines (Table S-5) that 1910.332(b)(3)(iii) requires in qualified person training. Take Electrical Safety for Exposed Workers in General Industry (Federal OSHA) first.

What you learn

  • Who is a qualified person
  • Exposed live parts and nominal voltage
  • Dead or live: the first decision
  • Locks and tags: deenergizing
  • Test before you touch, then restore power
  • Approach distances
  • Working near live parts: practices
  • Protective equipment and insulated tools
  • Switching circuits, tripped devices and flammable materials
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass the final exam, you finish the online classroom part. M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. issues your certificate of completion after it reviews your employer's signed hands-on checklist. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Seguridad eléctrica para personas calificadas en la industria general, parte teórica (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

The hands-on part, at your workplace

  • This product is the online classroom part. Your employer evaluates your hands-on skills at your workplace with the M Squared hands-on checklist: download the checklist (PDF).
  • Your employer emails the signed checklist to matt@msquaredsafety.com and monica@msquaredsafety.com. You upload nothing.
  • M Squared reviews the checklist, then marks the course complete and your certificate is issued.
  • The course never qualifies, certifies, designates or authorizes anyone. Your employer decides who is a qualified person (29 CFR 1910.399, definition of qualified person).

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

Completing this course does not make you a qualified person. Your employer must complete your on-the-job training, confirm your skills with the M Squared hands-on checklist and decide who is qualified. The checklist helps your employer confirm your skills. It does not designate you, and neither does the certificate. This course does not cover electric power generation, transmission and distribution work (29 CFR 1910.269) or NFPA 70E. NFPA 70E is industry practice, not an OSHA rule. Federal OSHA rules apply across the country. If you work in a state with its own OSHA-approved plan, your state may have different or more stringent rules.
