This online course is the classroom part of training for authorized entrants and attendants in general industry under federal OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 5157, with the respirator rules in 29 CFR 1910.134 and 8 CCR 5144. It is not for construction, agriculture or shipyards, and not for entry supervisors or rescue teams.

How it works

The hands-on part, at your workplace

  • This product is the online classroom part. Your employer evaluates your hands-on skills at your workplace with the M Squared hands-on checklist: download the checklist (PDF).
  • Your employer emails the signed checklist to matt@msquaredsafety.com and monica@msquaredsafety.com. You upload nothing.
  • M Squared reviews the checklist, then marks the course complete and your certificate is issued.
  • The course never qualifies, certifies, designates or authorizes anyone. Your employer decides who is an authorized entrant or an attendant, certifies your training (29 CFR 1910.146(g)(4); 8 CCR 5157(g)(4)) and identifies you on the entry permit.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

Your employer must still train you on your site's spaces and equipment, check your skills with the M Squared hands-on checklist, and identify you on the entry permit. This course does not include rescue practice, gas meter use or respirator fit testing, which your employer provides where your duties call for them. It does not decide who may enter a space. Your employer certifies that your training is done (29 CFR 1910.146(g)(4); 8 CCR 5157(g)(4)). This course covers general industry. Construction confined space entry (29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA; 8 CCR 1950 to 1962) is a different course. Federal OSHA rules apply across the country, and Cal/OSHA enforces Title 8 in California. If you work in another state with its own OSHA-approved plan, that state may have different or more stringent rules.
