This online course covers the worker training topics in the federal OSHA benzene standard for general industry (29 CFR 1910.1028(j)(3), with Appendices A, B and C) and is written for general industry workers who may be exposed to benzene.

What you learn

  • What benzene is and where it is found
  • How benzene harms you
  • Fire, spills and safe handling
  • Exposure limits and regulated areas
  • Air monitoring and your results
  • Controls, work practices and protective clothing
  • Respirators for benzene
  • Medical surveillance
  • Your right to know: labels, SDSs and the benzene rule
  • Emergencies and first aid
  • A final lesson listing what to review with your supervisor at your company

How it works

  • You take the course online, at your own pace, on a phone or a computer.
  • The final exam opens after at least 60 minutes of active study in the lessons.
  • Each topic lesson ends with practice questions that do not count toward your score.
  • The final exam has 25 questions drawn at random. You need 80 percent to pass, and you get 3 attempts.
  • When you pass, you get a certificate of completion from M Squared Safety Solutions, Inc. The certificate expires 1 year after it is issued.
  • This course is also available in Spanish: Concientización sobre el benceno (OSHA federal): capacitación en línea.

Your employer's part

This online course does not replace the training your employer must give on your own job: site-specific training, and hands-on practice and evaluation where the rule requires them.

What this course does not do

The course ends with a company review page: each worker reviews the employer's own regulated areas, monitoring results, controls, respirators, medical surveillance program and where the standard is kept with a supervisor. This is awareness-level training, 100 percent online. It does not fit test respirators or provide medical exams or medical surveillance. Oil and gas drilling, production and servicing, fuel handling after the fuel leaves the bulk terminal (except indoor dispensing for more than 4 hours a day), and the other operations in 1910.1028(a)(2) are outside the rule.
