Industrial and Plant Maintenance Fall Protection

A plant is full of elevated work with no obvious anchor: machinery tops, tank access, overhead conveyors, mezzanines, and pits. Maintenance crews move constantly, and permanent anchors never sit where the next job needs them. Mobile anchors and temporary guardrail cover the gap.

The hazard and the standard

General industry fall protection under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28 requires protection for walking-working surfaces 4 feet or more above a lower level, including mezzanines, platforms, and holes. Guardrails must sit 42 inches, plus or minus 3 inches, and withstand at least 200 pounds, per 29 CFR 1926.502(b). Fall arrest anchorages must hold at least 5,000 pounds per worker, per 29 CFR 1926.502(d)(15).

What fits

For overhead work with no anchor, a mobile grabber or davit brings the tie-off to the machine. For fixed edges, pits, and mezzanines, modular and weighted-base guardrail guards everyone passively. See the mobile fall protection systems and the temporary guardrail systems.

Common applications

  • Machinery and equipment maintenance
  • Tank, silo, and vessel access
  • Mezzanine, platform, and pit edges
  • Overhead conveyor and crane servicing
  • Shutdown and turnaround work

Buy or rent

Plants with steady maintenance schedules buy; shutdown and turnaround work often rents to flex capacity. M Squared Safety supplies both nationwide across the U.S. and Canada. Call 949-954-6581.
