Aircraft Maintenance and Hangar Fall Protection
An aircraft has no convenient anchor point. Wings, fuselage, and tail put technicians well above the floor with nothing overhead to clip into, and the work moves from plane to plane. Fixed anchors rarely reach where the technician needs to be, which is exactly the problem a mobile overhead anchor solves.
The hazard and the standard
Most aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul is general industry work, not construction. Under 29 CFR 1910.28(b)(1)(i) each employee on a walking-working surface with an unprotected side or edge 4 feet or more above a lower level must be protected. That is two feet lower than the construction trigger most people carry in their heads, and a wing surface clears it easily.
Where a personal fall arrest system is used, 29 CFR 1910.140(c)(13)(i) requires the anchorage to support at least 5,000 pounds for each employee attached, or under (c)(13)(ii) to be designed, installed and used under the supervision of a qualified person as part of a complete system maintaining a safety factor of at least two. A mobile grabber brings that rated overhead anchor to the aircraft.
Indoors, the infeasibility argument runs out
OSHA's long-standing position on work atop equipment is that it will not cite falls from open rolling stock under the Subpart D standards, but it will look to the PPE standard at 29 CFR 1910.132(d) where the work happens inside of or contiguous to a building and fall protection is feasible.
A hangar is the textbook case of inside a building. The argument that there was nothing practical to tie off to, which carries some weight out on an open ramp, does not travel indoors once rentable mobile anchors exist that can be positioned over the airframe.
Why fixed rail keeps leaving gaps
The recurring complaint about hangar rail is not that it fails. It is that the technician is never where it is. Work moves along the fuselage, out the wing, up to the tail, then to a different aircraft in a different bay. A rail installed around one airframe leaves gaps on the next one, and an MRO with a mixed fleet inherits those gaps permanently.
A mobile overhead anchor inverts the relationship: the anchor follows the technician and does not care what is in the bay. When the aircraft leaves, the unit rolls to the next one instead of becoming an asset bolted above an empty stand. Plenty of operations run both, with rail over the main line-maintenance bay and mobile units for heavy checks, transient aircraft and overflow.

Buy or rent
A busy MRO line usually buys a unit per bay.
