Collection: Platforms & Crossovers

Crossover bridges and platform crossovers

M Squared Safety supplies crossover bridges, platform crossover toeboards and roof access docks for crews who have to get over an obstruction rather than around it. Ships across the U.S. and Canada. Call 949-954-6581 if you need help specifying a span.

What a crossover bridge does

A crossover bridge is an elevated walkway that carries foot traffic over something a worker should not be stepping on or climbing across. On a roof that is usually a pipe run, a duct, a conduit bank, a curb or a parapet. In a plant it is often a pipe rack or a conveyor. The bridge gives a level walking surface with a defined edge, so the crossing stops being an improvised step over a hot line or a fragile duct.

The reason it matters is that the alternative is what people actually do. They step on the duct, they straddle the pipe, or they walk the parapet. A crossover removes the decision.

Crossover toeboards and guarded edges

A walking surface at height needs an edge treatment as well as a deck. Platform crossover toeboards close the gap at deck level so tools and debris cannot be kicked off onto someone below, and they give the walkway a defined boundary underfoot. Our Tie Down platform crossover toeboards are adjustable, covering roughly 4 ft to 7.5 ft and 5.5 ft to 9.75 ft, so one part fits a range of spans rather than needing a bespoke length for every crossing.

Roof access and ladder docks

The transition from ladder to roof is one of the most common places a fall happens, because the worker is changing grip, changing footing and changing angle at the same moment. A ladder dock gives a fixed, defined landing at the top of the ladder so that transition happens onto something designed for it.

What we carry

Choosing a crossover against guardrail or a personal system

A crossover solves an obstruction. It does not by itself solve an unprotected edge. If the walkway runs near a roof edge or an opening you still need guardrail or a personal fall arrest system, and on a roof with no suitable anchor that often means a mobile fall protection system. Passive protection first where it fits, personal systems where it does not. If you are not sure which applies to your layout, call us and describe the roof.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crossover bridge?

An elevated walkway that carries foot traffic over a roof or plant obstruction such as a pipe run, duct, conduit bank, curb or parapet. It gives a level walking surface with a defined edge instead of forcing the crew to step over or straddle the obstruction.

Does a crossover bridge satisfy OSHA fall protection?

Only for the obstruction it spans. OSHA requires fall protection at 6 feet in construction under 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(1), and at 4 feet in general industry under 29 CFR 1910.28. If the walkway runs near an unprotected edge or opening, you still need guardrail or a personal fall arrest system alongside it.

What does a platform crossover toeboard do?

It closes the gap at deck level so tools and debris cannot be kicked off the walkway onto someone below, and it gives the walking surface a defined boundary underfoot. Ours are adjustable, covering 4 ft to 7.5 ft and 5.5 ft to 9.75 ft.

What is a ladder dock used for?

It gives a fixed landing at the top of a ladder so the ladder-to-roof transition happens onto something designed for it. That transition, where the worker changes grip, footing and angle at once, is one of the most common places a fall happens.

Can I rent crossovers and platforms instead of buying?

Crossover bridges, toeboards and ladder docks are sold rather than rented, since they stay on a building once installed. If you need a temporary solution for a single project, call 949-954-6581 and we will scope it with you.
