Sometimes you cannot put an instrument there. The gas is inside a duct, or inside a gas cabinet, or inside an enclosure that is under negative pressure, or in a location where nobody can reach the detector to calibrate it. A sampling detector lets you mount the instrument somewhere accessible and run a sample line to the point you actually want to measure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also gives you something a diffusion detector does not: a flow indication. If the sample line blocks, you know.
