In a mechanical room, a compressor room or a pit that nobody occupies, the reading needs to arrive where the people are. A catalytic bead sensor burns the sample and measures the heat, which makes it accurate across a wide range of hydrocarbons but also means it can be poisoned by silicones and sulfur compounds, and it will not read correctly in an oxygen deficient atmosphere because it needs oxygen to burn. An infrared sensor measures absorption instead. It cannot be poisoned, it works without oxygen, and it fails obviously rather than quietly. Infrared costs more. In a clean environment with a known gas, catalytic is usually the right economics.
