The two we send out most are hydrogen sulfide, for wastewater work and sour service, and carbon monoxide, for work around engine exhaust and combustion equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are cheap enough to put one on every person on the crew, which is the point of them. Hydrogen sulfide in particular destroys your sense of smell at roughly the concentration where it becomes dangerous, so the crew member who says the smell has gone is not telling you the air has cleared. A confined space can hold oxygen deficiency, combustibles and toxics in any combination, and a single gas monitor is silent about the other two.
