Gas reaches the sensors by moving into the instrument on its own, which means it reports the air it is sitting in and nothing else. That makes it the right tool worn on the body during work inside a space, and the wrong tool for testing a space nobody has entered yet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-29\/subtitle-B\/chapter-XVII\/part-1910\/subpart-J\/section-1910.146\" rel=\"nofollow\"\u003e29 CFR 1910.146(d)(5)(i)\u003c\/a\u003e the atmosphere has to be tested before entry is authorized, which means before a head crosses the opening.
