Your employer decides who is qualified for each rigging task, and a signal person must also pass a practical test (1926.1428). Your employer must still instruct you on the unsafe conditions of your own job (1926.21(b)(2)). The course does not teach crane operation, load weights, lift planning or crane assembly, or the sling rules for general industry or shipyards. This is the federal OSHA course. If you work in a state with its own OSHA-approved plan, your state may have different or more stringent rules.
